Objective: Rice germ oil has been used in some people with diabetes mellitus in anticipation of decreasing blood glucose and complication though there was no scientific data. This study aims to investigate the effects of rice germ oil supplement on blood glucose, serum lipid and blood pressure levels in diabetic patients.
Methods: The subjects who were composed of 19 selected diabetic patients (NIDDM 15, IDDM 4) and 10 non-diabetic persons and they were supplemented with rice germ oil (15 g/day) for seven weeks. Fasting or postprandial blood glucose, fructosamine, glycated hemoglobin, and insulin as glucose metabolism related factors, and serum triglyceride, total cholesterol and systolic or diastolic blood pressure as complication related factors besides height, weight, and waist and hip circumferences were measured.
Results: Any significant difference could not be identified in fasting or postprandial blood glucose, fructosamine, glycated hemoglobin, and insulin of diabetic patients between before and after 7 weeks of Rice Germ Oil treatment. But serum triglyceride and cholesterol, and systolic or diastolic blood pressure levels decreased in all subjects covered in this study. Their significant reducing effects were observed in diabetic patients after seven weeks of rice germ oil supplementation and these effects seem to be dependent on its supplementary period.
Conclusion: These results suggested that rice germ oil can significantly reduce the serum triglyceride and total cholesterol concentrati ons, and blood pressure in diabetic patients though hypoglycemic effect of rice germ oil seems to be weak.
